 Supporting your child's learning

English

Spellings will be taught every day.  Lists will be placed on google drive for your child to see.  These will be tested at the end of every week.  Please read through these with your child for about 5 minutes every day.

Within Year 5, the children will build their knowledge and skills of writing techniques in order to write for different purposes.  Typically this will involve one writing piece being created every two weeks from a range of different genres including: non-fiction, poetry, stories, explanation texts, newspaper reports and recounts.  Please see below Year 5 writing expectations and goals.

Your child will read their class text every day.  This could be independently, echo reading, reading out loud to the class, or partner reading.  We recommend that your child reads for about 20 minutes a day.  This could be fiction books, non-fiction, recipe books and magazines.  Listening to your child read, and talking to them about their text, will help them to make better progress.  Asking your child questions about what they have read will also deepen their understanding and broaden their vocabulary range.  Your child will read the following books in the stated terms.

Stig of the Dump - Autumn

The Pearl Diver - Autumn

Five on a Treasure Island - Spring

The Silver Sword - Spring/Summer

The Hobbit - Summer

Maths

Your child will learn in a maths class along with children of a similar ability, but all children in the year group will learn the same concepts.  In every area of maths, children will apply skills of problem solving and reasoning.

Early in the year, children will learn about key aspects of place value before moving on to the four operations of: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  Key concepts include place value which underpins many maths concepts.  Later in the year children will learn about fractions, decimals, statistics, area, shape and data.

Times tables are absolutely vital and children should be able to say any answer to a times table question, up to 12 x 12, in three or four seconds.  Using TT Rockstars will help your child to embed these - every child has their own unique log in and password.  Please ask us if you are not sure what this is.  https://ttrockstars.co.uk

All children will use equipment to aid their understanding of many concepts.  This could include counters, cubes, place value charts and times tables grids.

Homework

Reading is a priority throughout our school. We expect that children read at least three times a week for 20 minutes at home and that this is recorded on GoRead/BoomReader. Weekly certificates will be given to the children who are spending the most time reading.

Maths homework will be set once a week and this is usually posted on a Friday.  It will support the learning which has been taking place in class that week.  Homework can be downloaded and printed off, but this is not always required.  Your child could look at the image/sheet on the google classroom and work out answers on paper at home.  Your child can click to 'submit' work on the classroom so we know they have completed the work.

 Computer Logins

All children have been provided with a school Google login and password. This is in the form of aother@williamshrewsbury.com, where 'a' is their first initial and 'other' is their surname. This will allow them to login to google.com and access the Year 5 class on the school's Google Classroom:

https://classroom.google.com/c/MTI4ODcyMTMyMDA0

The purpose of this is to post homework for maths and English (which should be submitted on the google classroom) and also for parents to see posts from the teachers (and respond with comments as needed). Your child has used this in school so definitely knows how to access work set for him/her!

Reading is also really important. Encourage your child to read for a short while everyday, either by themselves, or aloud to a family member.
