William Shrewsbury Primary School: Our Commitment to Sustainability

At William Shrewsbury Primary School, we are deeply committed to sustainable development, guided by our core values of care, achieve, respect, and equity. We believe it is essential to equip our pupils with the knowledge, skills, and values they need to protect their future and care for the world around them. Through these values, we strive to nurture a sense of responsibility, respect for others, and a drive to make positive changes both locally and globally.

Our sustainability efforts are embedded in our school culture, where pupils are actively leading the way. Every class has an Eco Warrior, who embodies our values of care and respect by working to reduce waste, promote the reuse and recycling of materials, and contribute to the school’s sustainability action plans. These pupils help ensure that water and energy are used wisely, fostering a sense of responsibility for the environment in line with our value of care.

Within our Eco Warrior team we also appoint Active Travel Ambassadors who encourage sustainable, healthy travel to school—whether by walking, scooting, or cycling. This role promotes our values of respect for the planet and equity, ensuring that all pupils have the opportunity to travel in an environmentally friendly way, regardless of their background.

To reinforce our commitment to sustainability, we hold whole-school assemblies and creative competitions, designed to inspire our community to change behaviours and find innovative solutions. We hold annual pre-loved uniform sales to encourage families to re-use items that are still in good condition and reduce the amount of clothing that we consume as a community. Our current recycling initiatives, including the collection of paper, cardboard, soft plastics, glasses, and pens, are just the beginning, and we continue to explore new ways to contribute to a sustainable future.

Through our gardening clubs and activities, pupils learn about healthy eating and sustainable growing, building connections with nature and reinforcing the importance of care for both the environment and one another.
